Last year the Boundary Commission made its final recommendations for Guildford which have been adopted for the upcoming local election on May 4th.

Overall we feel the changes make good sense and are quite positive for Guildford Labour, though as ever, there were issues we would have like to see resolved differently. The main changes are as follows:

  • While the boundaries for Stoke are unchanged, the ward is re-named Bellfields and Slyfield.
  • Friary and St Nicolas loses St Nicolas (though remains a three member ward) and is confusingly re-named Stoke. It has added the D3 area of York Road from Holy Trinity.
  • St Nicolas becomes a stand-alone, single member ward.
  • Holy Trinity and Christchurch merge to form a new Castle ward and includes the old Holy Trinity and Christchurch ward apart from the York Road and Abbotswood areas. This will be a three member ward.
  • Westborough will lose Rydes Hill and the Cathedral named roads and gain the Ashenden estate, Manor Farm campus and the Business Park from Onslow. It remains a three member ward.
  • Stoughton has split into two wards, Stoughton North and South, both with two members. Stoughton South has been adopted as per the draft recommendations.

We would have liked to see the Broadacres/Barnwood area at the north of Park Barn Drive added to Westborough – it is currently a rather incoherent part of leafy, rural Worplesdon, and we also feel that the Weston Road area sits more easily within the new Stoughton South ward. Overall, however, we feel these changes will help us to be more focussed for the next set of GBC elections next year.

These ward changes may mean you are asked to vote a different polling station than usual. Check before you leave home – your polling card will tell you where to go.

You will need photo ID at this election for the first time. You may be turned away from the polling station if you do not have it. You don’t need ID if you vote by post. A full list of ID’s can be found at the link below and if you do not have any of them, the council will provide a free identity card if you apply for one at the second link listed below.
