At our Guildford Labour AGM last year we were delighted to invite Kye Gbangbola to talk about his campaign, Truth About Zane.

In February 2014 Zane, aged 7, and his mum and dad were all taken ill in their Surrey home. Both Kye and Zane suffered cardiac arrest; Zane died and Kye remains paralysed from the waist down. The incident occurred during severe floods, which consumed the area earlier that year. Surrey Fire Brigade attended the scene and found a high concentration of deadly Hydrogen Cyanide Gas. It is believed this was leaking from the ground as the house was built on a reclaimed landfill site.

October 21st would have been Zane’s 14th birthday. The Fire Brigade Union organised a virtual party for Zane which included contributions from Matt Wrack, the FBU leader, MPs David Lammy and Richard Burgeon and former Green leader Natalie Bennett. Andy Burnham was hoping to add a few words, but was called away for a meeting and Keir Starmer sent the following letter of support:

“Thank you for inviting me to Zane’s Advance for Truth and Remembrance Event on what would have been his 14th birthday. It is a great tragedy that he is not with us today. I would like to send my best wishes to all who knew and loved him.

As a parent, I can only imagine the pain of losing a child and then having to find the strength to campaign for justice. We are all in awe of Kye and Nicole’s perseverance and resolve. It has been an honour to meet with them over the years and I am always left inspired and moved by their dedication. But it is not right that they are still having to fight for justice.

We all want the truth about what happened to Zane. The government needs to grant the independent panel inquiry that gives the family the answers they deserve and confidence in the system.

You can see a recording of the event at www.truthaboutzane.com as well as all the other supporting information.

The full story about this cover up warrants the overused word scandal. Zane’s parents have been appallingly treated and the system, for whatever reason, has closed ranks to try and keep hidden the reasons for Zane’s death. Do get involved – read the story, sign the petition, donate to the cause and spread the word. Guildford Labour Party is fully committed to finding out the Truth About Zane, but it needs everyone’s help to do it.
