Why should you have to sell your home to fund your old age?

People's wishes to maintain their independence for as long as possible are paramount to Labour.  We plan to integrate social care with the NHS, make it more cost-effective and responsive to the changing needs of our population.

If the local authority is arranging your care home, they'll do a means test to decide how much you should pay towards it.  Your property will be included in the means test at its present market value less any mortgage or loan you may have on it, and less 10% of its value to allow for expenses to sell it. If your capital and income is above £23,250 you’re likely to have to pay your care fees, and if you can’t do this from your income you may have to sell your home.

Labour believes you shouldn't have to sell your home to provide for your old age.
