Brian, Elizabeth and Matthew’s Labour Party priorities for Friary & St Nicolas.

  • More affordable, decent housing and a fairer deal for renters.
  • Better, cheaper and more frequent bus services in and out of the town centre.
  • An imaginative plan to revitalise the town centre, particularly North Street.
  • Better support for our homelessness services.
  • Improved recycling provision and action on air pollution.

I moved to Guildford in 2010 after living in London for 30 years and currently work as a Community Projects Officer for Walton on Thames Charity. Before that I spent ten years at UCL Institute of Education where I specialised in adult English and maths  education, was co-chair of the Centre for Education in the Criminal Justice Sector and taught on the adult maths teacher training programme. I have also worked as a teacher, sound engineer, video producer and copywriter.

I am a trustee of The Guildford Institute, have been a governor of RGS Guildford for seven years and have just stood down from being meetings secretary for the Medieval Studies   Forum. I am a member group of the cross-party Guildford and Woking in Europe group campaigning for Remain before, during and since the referendum, have a (slightly neglected) allotment plot at Bellfields and sing regularly in Open Mics around the town.

I have been actively involved with Guildford Labour Party since the 2015 election and am currently Vice Chair of the local party. We care about housing and homelessness, public transport, air pollution and the impact of austerity on the working poor. I believe these core Labour values are shared with many people living in Friary and St Nicolas.

My professional background is in Refugee Law and Human Rights. For over 25 years I served in frontline humanitarian hotspots in former Yugoslavia, Zimbabwe/South Africa, Somalia and at policy level in Geneva, Switzerland. I continue to work with Syrian refugees in Woking.

For the past 6 years I have been passionately involved with the issues around children with additional needs in Guildford: their mental health provision, Education and Health Care Plans and participate in a variety of forums such as the Hellen Arkel Dyslexia Center and CAHMS. I am a member of the Acquired Brain Injury Trust and, as a member of NHS Engage for Surrey Hampshire and Borders, I participate in activities to support those afflicted by the   disease of alcohol and drug addiction.

As a Trustee of the Mindfulness Initiative UK, I have an interest in building resilience in young people and hard to reach communities through meditation. I am currently the BAME Officer for Guildford Labour Party and a member of Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum (SMEF) working towards inclusion and community spirit for all. As a single mum of daughters, I am very mindful of women’s issues including WASPI, domestic violence and the gender pay gap.

Originally from the Commonwealth, I am a proud believer that by working together, life can be better for the many, not just the few.
