The Conservative Government has cut budgets for the arts to the bone. Libraries and museums are cash-starved. Theatres and music venues are hard-pressed. Without council support, many residents will be priced out of the arts.

Labour would like to see a more varied offer in the venues it supports, so that everyone in Guildford will feel enthusiastic to join in the arts. GLive, for example, is a jewel that should attract much wider audiences with a diverse menu of events. We also admire the work of Guildford’s theatres and small independent music venues, especially when they nurture new performers.

In the same way, we would shift the emphasis in sport to sport for all, encouraging people to take up new sports and to promote exercise.  We’d like to see a future in which more people join together for leisure, sport and arts.

Over twenty years ago, Labour councillors pushed through the building of the Spectrum and now that it is coming to the end of its life, we will campaign for a replacement state-of-the-art leisure centre fit for the 21st century and affordable for all.

What will Guildford Labour do?

• We make it a priority to find a permanent home for Guildford City Football Club, which we already sponsor.
• We will build Guildford’s cultural reputation to draw in visitors and build our tourist industry.
• We will support a state-of-the-art sports centre for everyone.
• We will prioritise accessible, affordable sport for all.
