A significant swing of support towards Howard Smith saw Labour break the 10,000 vote barrier in Guildford for the first time since 1979.
Labour's vote share rose by 6.9%, following on from a similar rise in 2015, and it is clear that a groundswell of support for the party makes them the genuine challengers to the Tories in future elections.
Although the Liberal Democrat vote also increased from their disastrous showing in the last election, apart from 2015 they recorded their worst result in the constituency in almost 40 years.
It's clearer than ever before that Labour supporters should ignore the totally misleading graphs produced by the Lib Dems and vote for the party and policies in which they believe.
Speaking after the result was announced, Howard told the Guildford Dragon, “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of standing in the Guildford constituency in which I was born and bred.
“It was a honour for me to be the Labour Party candidate. I had a fantastic team and we went out there with a really positive message and policies that we believe in.”
