Guildford South East

Howard Smith – Guildford South East

I am Howard Smith your Labour candidate in the Surrey County Council election on the 4th of May.

I was born in here in Guildford and went to school at Bellfields Primary and then George Abbot secondary. I am married to Debbie, am a new dad and proud to be standing in the Ward in which I live.

In my career I have worked as a professional musician, worked for major media companies, including the BBC, and currently run my own live music promotion company in the centre of the town.

An active campaigner, I joined the Labour Party in Guildford, for whom I have always supported and voted, in frustration at the way that our town has been so badly run. In particular, by poor decision-making, absence of care, and complete lack of meaningful consultation with local people.

There is so much that is great about our town and I meet many visitors who are enchanted with what we have here, but we know too many things are beset by poor decision-making and delays. We don’t want Guildford to be subject to huge change, we simply want to enhance what we have with timely maintenance and sympathetic improvements.  We want to ensure that we preserve its beauty but at the same time provide the infrastructure and the services that we need.

I believe the love and commitment I have for my hometown, combined with a determination to do all I can for the area in which I live, would make me a suitable candidate to be your representative on Surrey County Council.

We need to encourage improvements and development to the parts of the town centre which have been abandoned for too long; to the roads and services as well, ensuring that Guildford in the future is a great place for everybody. As someone who lives and works here, with a family and young son growing up here, I want to make sure that the town is the best possible place for all of us.
